Box Office: DEADPOOL reigns on as GODS OF EGYPT bombs

Despite three new wide releases, 20th Century Fox‘s Deadpool easily won first place at the box office for its third-straight weekend. The Tim Miller-directed comic book adaptation, starring Ryan Reynolds, added $31.5 million domestically to bring its three-week total to $285.6 million. Internationally, the $58-million budgeted film earned another $40 million for an overseas total of $324.2 million. The movie has now earned an impressive $610 million worldwide.

SPOTLIGHT sweeps the board at 2016 Spirit Awards

Film Independent, the nonprofit arts organization that produced the Spirit Awards, the LA Film Festival and Film Independent at LACMA, handed out top honors to Spotlight, Beasts of No Nation and Room at this afternoon’s 31st Film Independent Spirit Awards. Carol, The Diary of a Teenage Girl, Krisha, The Look of Silence, Son of Saul and Tangerine also received awards at the 2016 Spirit Awards, which was held in a tent on the beach in Santa Monica.

J.K. Simmons joins Peter Berg’s PATRIOTS DAY

CBS Films and Lionsgate have today announced that Academy Award winner J.K. Simmons (Whiplash, Zootopia) will join Academy Award nominee Mark Wahlberg (The Departed, Lone Survivor) in the upcoming Patriots Day movie. The film will be directed by Peter Berg (Deepwater Horizon, Lone Survivor) and is set to be produced by Scott Stuber, Mark Wahlberg, Hutch Parker, Dylan Clark, Stephen Levinson and Michael Radutzky.

Tye Sheridan joins Spielberg’s READY PLAYER ONE

Steven Spielberg has found a leading man for his Ready Player One. Tye Sheridan will reportedly play Wade Watts in the big-screen adaptation of Ernest Cline’s best-seller. Tye Sheridan joins a cast that already includes Olivia Cooke (Me and Earl and the Dying Girl, Bates Motel) as Ar3mis, an OASIS avatar belonging to the coincidentally-named Samantha Cook, and Ben Mendelsohn (Mississippi Grind, The Dark Knight Rises) as the story’s villain.

BATMAN V SUPERMAN to receive R-rated cut on Blu-Ray

The massive of success of 20th Century Fox‘s Deadpool at the box office has seemingly provoked Warner Bros. to release an R-rated extended cut of Zack Snyder’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice for an upcoming Blu-ray edition titled the Dawn of Justice Ultimate Edition. The R rating was given for the extended cut’s “sequences of violence.”

PETE’S DRAGON remake debuts a teaser trailer

The family film blends live action and CGI to tell the story of the special bond between an orphaned boy, Pete, and his best friend, Elliott, who just happens to be a dragon. It stars Bryce Dallas Howard (The Help) as Grace, a park ranger who discovers the existence of Elliott; 10-year-old Oakes Fegley (This is Where I Leave You) as Pete; Wes Bentley (The Hunger Games) as Jack, a local mill owner; New Zealand native Karl Urban (Star Trek Into Darkness) as Jack’s brother, Gavin; Oona Laurence as Natalie, the young girl who befriends Pete; and Oscar-winner Robert Redford (Barefoot in the Park, All the President’s Men) as Grace’s father.

Box Office: DEADPOOL dominates for a $55m second weekend

20th Century Fox‘s Deadpool dominated the worldwide box office for a second-straight weekend, bringing in another $55 million domestically for a North American total of $235.4 million. Deadpool has already surpassed X-Men: Days of Future Past‘s $233.9 million domestic total in just 10 days. Overseas, Deadpool earned $85 million its second weekend for an international total of $256.5 million and an impressive worldwide box office total of $491.9 million!
