Opening in second place domestically was Summit/Lionsgate’s The Divergent Series: Allegiant with an estimated $29 million from 3,740 theaters, an average of $7,767 per theater. That’s a big drop from the debuts of the previous two films – the first Divergent opened to $54.6 million in 2014 and Insurgent started with $52.3 million last year.
The two-part The Divergent Series: Allegiant has just scored a new addition to its ensemble cast. Jeff Daniels (Dumb and Dumber To, “The Newsroom”) will play the final book’s chief antagonist, David.
Exactly one year after Veronica Roth’s bestselling young-adult novel Divergent was brought to the screen starring Shailene Woodley, Theo James, Ansel Elgort and Miles Teller, Lionsgate and Summit Entertainment released the sequel The Divergent Series: Insurgent, co-starring Kate Winslet, Octavia Spencer, Naomi Watts, Jai Courtney, Zoe Kravitz and more.
Directed by Robert Schwentke, the film stars Shailene Woodley, Theo James, Kate Winslet, Octavia Spencer, Suki Waterhouse, Jonny Weston, Naomi Watts, Rosa Salazar and Keiynan Lonsdale.
“The second film in the ‘Divergent’ franchise takes the story and action to another level and, by partnering with RealD, we were able to blend gripping performances and mind-blowing spectacle to create a unique event on screen,” said producers Douglas Wick and Lucy Fisher. “We cannot wait to share this experience with audiences around the world.”
On the heels of yesterday’s news of Naomi Watts joining the cast, the second installment of the Divergent action adventure franchise, Insurgent, has added “LOST” and “Hawaii Five-0” star Daniel Dae Kim to its roster.
Academy Award and Golden Globe winner Octavia Spencer has joined the cast of Insurgent, the second installment of the “Divergent” action adventure franchise, based on author Veronica Roth’s New York Times best seller. Spencer will play Johanna, the leader of the Amity faction, opposite Shailene Woodley, Theo James and Academy Award winner Kate Winslet.
