GE16: 5 seats filled in long Galway West/South Mayo count

The newly-expanded constituency of Galway West/South Mayo, in which BuzzHub HQ is located, has elected 5 TDs to Dáil Éireann after 2 days and 14 counts. New TDs Catherine Connolly and Hildegarde Naughton join the outgoing Eamon Ó Cuív, Sean Kyne and Noel Grealish.

Ó Cuív, infamously an immensely popular Fíanna Fáil candidate in the Connamara region, topped the poll and was elected on the 9th count.

Grealish, the now-Independent former leader of the Progressive Democrats, was deemed elected on the 13th count.

Catherine Connolly, a popular city councillor, received an immense quantity of transfers upon the eliminated of Social Democrat Niall Ó Tuathail, and soared to elected on the 14th count.

Also elected on Count 14 were Fine Gael duo Sean Kyne (returning TD) and Hildegarde Naughton (a Senator).

Sinn Féin’s Trevor Ó Clochartaigh narrowly missed out on the 5th seat, which he had been expected to take easily prior to yesterday morning’s tallies.

This team of 5 will represent the people of Galway West (including us) in the 32nd Dáil. That is: if the 32nd Dáil ever actually meet….
