BuzzHub’s 2016 Oscar Predictions

The 2016 Academy Awards, hosted by Chris Rock, take place tonight in Hollywood, and it’s time for us to make our bold final predictions for who will take home a little golden man in the major categories. Plus: who we think should win, and who could cause an upset.

Best Picture

Will Win: Spotlight

Could Win: The Revenant

Should Win: Room

Yeah, this is undoubtedly the least predictable Best Picture race of our lifetime. Even though The Revenant, indisputably the more impressive cinematic work, has won the Golden Globe and BAFTA equivalents of this category, it’s Tom McCarthy’s honest and engaging journalism drama that we think Academy voters will show love. The Big Short, a flashier and more comedic but essentially similar film, is also in with a slight chance of an upset.

Best Director

Will Win: Alejandro González Iñárritu

Could Win: George Miller

Should Win: Lenny Abrahamson

It would be an extraordinary anomaly for the Academy to give Iñárritu two Best Picture awards in a row, but significantly more plausible is that they’ll award Spotlight in that category, and recognise Iñárritu’s magnificent work on The Revenant in Best Director. George Miller is the only real competition.

Best Leading Actress

Will Win: Brie Larson

Could Win: Saoirse Ronan

Should Win: Brie Larson

Larson gave the year’s best performance, and everybody knows it.

Best Leading Actor

Will Win: Leonardo DiCaprio

Could Win: Michael Fassbender Leonardo DiCaprio

Should Win: Michael Fassbender

Leo’s performance in The Revenant was impressive, and it’s universally agreed that 2016 is “his turn”. However, we’d have rather seen the terrific Fassbender awarded for his captivating turn in Steve Jobs.

Best Supporting Actress

Will Win: Kate Winslet

Could Win: Alicia Vikander

Should Win: Rachel McAdams

This is a really poor category. Not one of the 5 nominated actresses deserves to be on the list. Winslet will probably get a Steve Jobs sympathy vote and take the prize.

Best Original Screenplay

Will Win: Spotlight

Could Win: Inside Out

Should Win: Inside Out or Bridge of Spies

Best Adapted Screenplay

Will Win: The Big Short

Could Win: Room

Should Win: Room

Best Animated Feature

Will Win: Inside Out

Could Win: Nothing. Inside Out.

Should Win: Inside Out

Best Cinematography

Will Win: The Revenant

Could Win: Sicario

Should Win: The Revenant

Best Film Editing

Will Win: Mad Max: Fury Road

Could Win: The Revenant

Should Win: Mad Max: Fury Road

Best Original Score

Will Win: The Hateful Eight

Could Win: Carol

Should Win: Bridge of Spies or Sicario
