Box Office: Furious 7 spends third weekend on top as Paul Blart opens well

The third weekend of April saw the release of a number of new movies, but none of them offered much competition to Universal Pictures’ Furious 7, which remained #1 for its third weekend with an estimated $29 million. That’s down 51% from last week as it gets closer to crossing the $300 million mark with $294.4 million after three weekends.

Furious 7 hits $1bn worldwide; a first for Universal!

Universal Pictures today announced that with Friday’s theatrical grosses, Furious 7 will cross $1 billion at the worldwide box office. Continuing to break records at every turn, Furious 7 marks Universal’s first film to achieve $1 billion during its initial release, with 1993’s Jurassic Park having reached $1.044 billion after the 3D re-release in 2013. With total global grosses estimated at $1.009 billion through today, Furious 7 has earned an estimated $735.2 million overseas in 17 days and an estimated $273.7 million in North America after 15 days.

Box Office: The Longest Ride loses out to Furious 7’s $60m second weekend

With a 59% drop, Furious 7, which reunites Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, Paul Walker, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Jordana Brewster, and Ludacris, joined by Jason Statham, Kurt Russell and more, held up relatively well with a second weekend estimated take of $60.5 million. Despite the larger drop, it beat last year’s Captain America: the Winter Soldier‘s second weekend by nearly $20 million, and that second weekend gross is more than all but five movies have grossed in the month of April. With that, Furious 7‘s domestic gross crosses the $250 million mark, making it the biggest movie in the “Fast and Furious” franchise after just ten days.

“See You Again,” rapper Wiz Khalifa’s collaboration with singer-songwriter Charlie Puth, is a tribute to the late Paul Walker, who died in a car crash in November 2013. The official music video for the Furious 7 soundtrack’s top single (which reached no. 1 on iTunes on Saturday) takes it one step further, mixing footage from Walker’s six movies as cop-turned-speedster Brian O’Conner, including the heartbreaking final moments of Furious 7.
