Earlier today, 20th Century announced that they had broken the global box office record with $5.5 billion grossed in 2014 and they celebrated by dating a number of new movies, including one anticipated sequel, a spin-off to the company’s most successful superhero franchise, another sequel to an upcoming reboot and much more.

Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment has announced that director Matt Reeves’ Dawn of the Planet of the Apes will be available on 3D Blu-ray, Blu-ray and DVD on December 2 and on Digital HD November 11. The film quickly became the highest-grossing film in the franchise this summer, netting nearly $680 million at the box office.

We’re over halfway through one of the worst Julys in recent memory at the box office and the release of three new movies in wide release, including two sequels, wasn’t enough to revive things as 20th Century Fox’s Dawn of the Planet of the Apes remained in first place for a second weekend in a row with $36 million.

Things were looking slightly better at the box office this weekend with a return to the blockbuster sequels that tend to be reliable moneymakers. That was certainly the case with Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (20th Century Fox), directed by Matt Reeves (Cloverfield) and starring Andy Serkis, Jason Clarke, Gary Oldman, Keri Russell and more, which topped the domestic box office with an estimated $73 million this weekend in 3,967 theaters.

The tragic death of Paul Walker has left a lot of questions up in the air, most notably the impact it would have on the already in-production Fast & Furious 7, which had director James Wan scrambling to try to make the planned July 11, 2014 release date. With production halted for an indeterminate time, it raised even more questions about whether that date was feasible, something Universal Pictures has remained quiet about.
