It’s not that uncommon for new August releases to have trouble against stronger returning movies and that was the case this weekend as three new movies opened in wide release and failed to make a mark against the top two returning movies. To some, it may have been surprising that the latest installment of Sylvester Stallone’s hit all-star action franchise The Expendables 3 (Lionsgate) not only didn’t come close to the opening of its predecessors, but it wasn’t even the top new movie of the weekend.
Front Seat Cinema is back, with reviews of Guardians of the Galaxy and The Expendables 3, news of Warner Bros/DC’s mystery release dates and the weekend box office- which saw GOTG have the biggest August opening of all time!
WHERE ACTION STARS GO TO DIE
This morning, the internet is a-buzz with word that a high-quality copy of the blockbuster action sequel The Expendables 3 has somehow been leaked online. This is perhaps the most high profile pre-release leak to happen over recent years.
Opening in theaters on August 15, the action film stars Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Randy Couture, Terry Crews, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Wesley Snipes, Antonio Banderas, Mel Gibson, Harrison Ford, Kellan Lutz, Ronda Rousey, Victor Ortiz, Glen Powell and Kelsey Grammer.
Despite the previous two films in the series brandishing an “R,” The Expendables 3 has officially received a PG-13 rating from the MPAA for “violence including intense sustained gun battles and fight scenes, and for language.” The first film was rated R for “strong action and bloody violence throughout, and for some language,” while the second film was rated R for “strong bloody violence throughout.”
In The Expendables 3, Barney (Stallone), Christmas (Statham) and the rest of the team comes face-to-face with Conrad Stonebanks (Gibson), who years ago co-founded The Expendables with Barney. Stonebanks subsequently became a ruthless arms trader and someone who Barney was forced to kill… or so he thought. Stonebanks, who eluded death once before, now is making it his mission to end The Expendables — but Barney has other plans. Barney decides that he has to fight old blood with new blood, and brings in a new era of Expendables team members, recruiting individuals who are younger, faster and more tech-savvy. The latest mission becomes a clash of classic old-school style versus high-tech expertise in the Expendables’ most personal battle yet.
