Updated: ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2’ mid-credits scene features ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’ characters

As the audience in my screening sat, waiting for some Sinister Six-related scene to be played out, what they really saw put everyone in a state of either complete confusion or utter excitement.

SPOILER ALERT!

Halfway through the scrolling credits (as opposed to the previous Card credits), a blue circle appears in the middle of the screen. The camera zooms in and we see an exterior shot of a military base. Inside, there are shots of Evan Jonigkeit’s Toad and Josh Helman’s Stryker (wait a minute, aren’t they in…?).

Suddenly, none other than Jennifer Lawrence appears, as Mystique. Have the fandom’s dreams finally come true? Will the Spidey and X-Men universes unite on the big screen?

After the short action-packed scene, a black card flashes up with the logos of 20th Century Fox and Bad Hat Harry at the bottom, suggesting this is nothing more than an unusually-placed ad for Days of Future Past).

Have you seen the film? What do you think this scene means? Hopefully we’ll get word from somebody at either Sony or Fox soon enough, and stay tuned to BuzzHub for more great Amazing Spider-Man 2 coverage

Update

Variety reports that The Amazing Spider-Man 2 director Marc Webb had an existing contract with Fox Searchlight following his work on 500 (Days) of Summer. Following the success of his work on the first Spidey reboot, he had to endure contractual wranglings as Sony wanted him back for Spidey 2, whereas he was tied to Fox for another film.

The solution?

Fox agreed to let Webb head to Sony on the proviso that Sony would promote Fox’s new X-Men movie.
