Simon Pegg, who played Scotty in the last two “Star Trek” films, is taking on a second task for the third installment – screenwriter. According to Deadline, Pegg has been set to co-write Star Trek 3, which will be directed by “Fast & Furious” helmer Justin Lin. This is following the news from December that Roberto Orci would no longer be writing the Paramount/Skydance film. Pegg is co-writing the script with Doug Jung (“Dark Blue,” “Banshee”), says The Hollywood Reporter‘s Borys Kit.
Following word yesterday that four-time The Fast and the Furious franchise helmer Justin Lin is set to direct the upcoming Star Trek 3/13, Paramount Pictures has officially announced a release date of July 8, 2016, which marks the 50th anniversary of Gene Roddenberry’s enduring sci-fi franchise.
Justin Lin is boarding the USS Enterprise and will direct the third installment of Paramount Pictures’ “Star Trek” franchise. The hiring of Lin comes two weeks after Roberto Orci backed away from the directing gig. Orci had been hired for the helming job after J.J. Abrams had to exit the sequel due to his commitment to direct Disney’s “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.”
Following the departure of Roberto Orci from the director’s chair of Star Trek 3, the hunt for a new director has already begun and now Deadline reports that Paramount Pictures and J.J. Abrams have narrowed it down to a list of five names. On the list are directors Rupert Wyatt (Rise of the Planet of the Apes), Morten Tyldum (The Imitation Game), Daniel Espinosa (Safe House), Justin Lin (Fast & Furious), and Duncan Jones (Moon,Warcraft).
Roberto Orci is no longer directing Star Trek 3. The film was set to be the first directorial gig for the writer who worked (with Alex Kurtzman) on the first two revamped Trek films directed by J.J. Abrams. Orci and Kurtzman split as creative partners earlier this year, and the Trek 3 job was Orci’s bold step forward. Now Skydance and Paramount are making deals for a new director.
Following a recent report that he was after the job, Variety is reporting that Star Trek and Star Trek Into Darkness screenwriter/producer Roberto Orci will direct the 13th franchise feature. Orci is joined on the project by screenwriters Patrick McKay and J.D. Payne, who will help him pen the next adventure of the Enterprise crew.
It was revealed a few weeks ago that writer/producer Roberto Orci was lobbying for the director’s chair for the upcoming Star Trek 3. Now, Deadline reports that he has entered negotiations with Skydance Productions and Paramount to helm the film and is the clear frontrunner for the position.
