Director Rob Schrab (“Community,” “The Mindy Project”) will mark his feature directorial debut overseeing construction on The LEGO Movie Sequel, the eagerly awaited follow-up to the worldwide sensation The LEGO Movie. The announcement was made today by Greg Silverman, President of Creative Development and Worldwide Production, Warner Bros. Pictures.
Warner Bros. made headlines today with a series of major announcements concerning their upcoming slate of blockbusters.
One of the unquestioned highlights of February’s hit The LEGO Movie was Will Arnett voicing a pompous Batman, and audiences are about to get a lot more of him as Heat Vision reports that Warner Bros. is readying a solo movie for the character to be released in 2017.
Deadline reports that Warner Bros. has found their man to helm the sequel this years break out hit The LEGO Movie, and they’ve chosen Chris McKay, who served as the animation co-director on the first film. McKay is also credited with directing several episodes of “Robot Chicken,” “Titan Maximum,” and “Moral Orel” in addition to the TV movie Robot Chicken: Star Wars Episode III.
Two new movies opened in wide release on Friday. Not that anyone would notice as the blockbuster smash The LEGO Movie (Warner Bros.) ran rampant over the box office for a third week in a row, this time grossing two-and-a-half times the amount brought in by the #2 movie. Most of the movies that opened over the extended dual holiday weekend last week also took a massive drop this week, which meant that the two new movies could venture into second and third place despite weak showings.
Following an appropriately awesome (and still growing) box office for their The LEGO Movie, Warner Bros. Pictures has officially set a release date for an untitled sequel: May 26, 2017!
With its strong date night appeal, About Last Night opened strong on Valentine’s Day and wound up ahead of fellow 80s remakes RoboCop and Endless Love this weekend. Still, it was no match for The LEGO Movie, which easily led the box office over President’s Day weekend.
