Seven years after his last film appearance, the legendary Jack Nicholson is set to make a comeback in a US remake of Oscar-nominated German comedy Toni Erdmann, with Kristen Wiig in talks to play his daughter.
Toni Erdmann tells the story of an eccentric music teacher who inhabits a disguise and alter-ego to reconnect with his workaholic adult daughter. The original film stars Peter Simonischek and Sandra Hüller as the father and daughter. One notable scene sees Simonischek don this interesting costume:
We wonder if Nicholson will wear something similar.
Nicholson’s last film was James L. Brooks’ mediocre rom-com How Do You Know; Doug Liman and Tom Cruise’s attempts to recruit him in 2013 for El Presidente fell through.
This will merely be the latest US remake of a successful European film: Kevin Hart and Bryan Cranston are currently shooting Untouchable, a reimagining of the popular French drama Les Intouchables.
The US remake (which will presumable be titled… Tony Freeman?) will be produced by the Gary Sanchez Productions offshoot Gloria Sanchez Productions. Jessica Elbuam, Will Ferrell and Adam McKay will produce alongside Jonas Dornbach and Janine Jackowski. The original film’s director, Maren Ade, will serve as executive producer.
We can’t wait to see Jack back on screen.
