George Michael dies aged 53

It seems almost an inevitable part of the cruel 2016 narrative that one of the most popular performs of Christmas music, including the iconic “Last Christmas”, would die on December 25. Today brings the sad news that George Michael, has “died peacefully in his home”, according to a statement by his publicist.

Born Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou, he rose to prominence in the duo Wham! with Andrew Ridgeley. Wham! were responsible for the beloved Christmas classic “Last Christmas”, as well as a slew of other hits.

Throughout a lengthy solo career, George Michael released hits like “Believe”, “Careless Whisper” and “Faith”.

Though “Last Christmas” is beloved by so many, George Michael released another excellent Christmas song in 2009, titled “December Song (I Dreamed Of Christmas)”. It’s sombre, and melancholy, and has a special poignance today.

RIP George Michael, a man who truly put the ‘star’ in popstar.
