TIME Magazine have announced their 2016 Person of the Year, the prestigious title awarded to a figure with enormous influence over the news cycle of the past 12 months. This year’s POTY is US President-Elect Donald Trump, who TIME are calling “President of the Divided States of America”.
This year’s runners-ups are Hillary Clinton, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, The Crispr Pioneers, Beyoncé, “The Hackers” and “The Populists”. Trump is the latest in a long line of President-Elects to receive “Person of the Year”: Barack Obama and George W. Bush were “Person of the Year” in 2012 and 2008, and 2004 and 2000, respectively.
TIME wrote: “For reminding America that demagoguery feeds on despair and that truth is only as powerful as the trust in those who speak it, for empowering a hidden electorate by mainstreaming its furies and live-streaming its fears, and for framing tomorrow’s political culture by demolishing yesterday’s, Donald Trump is TIME’s 2016 Person of the Year”.
