BuzzHub’s Most Anticipated Films of 2017

Year-end has come around again, and hence we must proclaim publicly our “Most Anticipated Films of 2017”, the motion pictures due for release next year that our appetite is most whetted by the mere mention of.

There are sequels, reboots and prequels, adaptations and- gosh- some original productions too. 2016 was a poor year for cinema; 2017, we pray, shall be an improvement.

star-wars-episode-8-mark-hamill1. STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI

Rian Johnson takes the directing reigns from J.J. Abrams as Finn, Rey, Poe and LUKE SKYWALKER return for more Jedi adventures. Abrams’ The Force Awakens was a fantastic return to the Star Wars universe, and Episode 8 will hopefully do it justice. We’ll miss Han Solo though… ETA December 15

A year with a Christopher Nolan film is always a good year. Dunkirk, Nolan’s first original project in a decade not to begin with ‘In’depicts a ferocious World War 2 battle. The film stars Tom Hardy, Mark Rylance, Kenneth Branagh, Cillian Murphy and One Direction’s Harry Styles. We don’t know what to expect, but it’s Nolan, so it’ll likely be an incredible film. ETA July 21

Kingsman-2015-after-credits-hq3. KINGSMAN: THE GOLDEN CIRCLE

Matthew Vaughn’s first sequel ever sees the return of the mysterious Kingsmen he introduced in 2015’s fantastic The Secret Service: the charming Taron Egerton will take centre-stage alongside Channing Tatum, Jeff Bridges, Elton John (!), Mark Strong and… Colin Firth? ETA October 6

Aaron Sorkin’s directorial debut stars Jessica Chastain in the true story of an infamous underground poker pro. Idris Elba, Kevin Costner, Michael Cera and Bill Camp co-star in what will surely be one of the smartest character dramas of the year. ETA December TBC

logan-2017-hugh-jackman-wolverine5. LOGAN

James Mangold’s previous Wolverine movie was a thrilling samurai adventure. His second, which will mark Hugh Jackman’s final appearance as the mutant, is a dark R-rated western. Patrick Stewart’s Charles Xavier will also be signing off from the X-Men franchise. ETA March 3

t2-trainspotting-poster6. T2: TRAINSPOTTING

Danny Boyle reunited the original Trainspotters (Ewan McGregor, Ewan Bremner, Robert Carlyle and Jonny Lee Miller) 21 years after the spectacular original. Heroin shall be consumed, Scotland shall be honoured and one of the most reliable directors of his generation shall deliver a smashing sequel. ETA January 27

guardians-vol2-teaser-poster7. GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2

James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy remains arguably Marvel Studios’ most distinct and memorable film to date, and we have high hopes for his follow-up. Will Baby Groot grow back to full size? Kurt Russell joins the cast as Star-Lord (Chris Pratt)’s father. ETA April 28

blade118. BLADE RUNNER 2049

After delivering 2016’s best sci-fi with Arrival, Denis Villeneuve faces the challenge of a Blade Runner sequel that introduces exciting new elements into the rich tapestry of Ridley Scott’s original. Harrison Ford’s return as Deckard Shaw is a positive sign, as is the involvement of Ryan Gosling, Jared Leto and Robin Wright. 2049 could be one of 2017’s true cinematic highlights. ETA October 5

Andy Serkis’ guerilla gorilla Caesar is one of modern cinema’s most stunningly innovative performances, and he’ll return (for the final time?) in Matt Reeves’ follow-up to 2014’s superb Dawn of the Planet. Woody Harrelson leads the human cast. ETA July 14

screen-shot-2016-12-09-at-10-30-3510. SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING

Marvel’s greatest hero (yes, we said it!) finally comes home in his first MCU-acknowledging solo instalment. Tom Holland’s brief appearance as Peter Parker in Civil War was that film’s highlight, and we can’t wait to see him stretch his spidey-legs opposite Michael Keaton (essentially reprising his role from Birdman), Donald Glover and Robert Downey Jr! We’re praying director Jon Watts is up to the task. ETA July 7

C’mon, Prometheus wasn’t actually THAT bad, and Ridley Scott’s return to the Alien world (with Michael Fassbender’s David in tow) has all the ingredients of an extremely solid sci-fi. Katherine Waterston co-stars. ETA May 19

13221402_1005445686158300_8318363157161407548_o12. THOR: RAGNAROK

Between Guardians Vol. 2Homecoming and Thor’s trilogy-closer, it’s going to be a ridiculously good year for Marvel Studios. Hunt for the Wilderpeople director Taika Waititi takes on the Asgardian prince in a winter release that boasts one of the year’s best casts: Tom Hiddleston, Mark Ruffalo, Cate Blanchett, Jeff Goldblum, Sam Neill, Idris Elba, Anthony Hopkins, Karl Urban and Benedict Cumberbatch join Chris Hemsworth’s Thor for a mystical, galactic adventure. ETA October 27

king-arthur-sdcc-poster13. KING ARTHUR: LEGEND OF THE SWORD

There aren’t many directors capable of breathing new life into the endlessly-recycled Arthurian legend, but if Legend of the Sword‘s impressive trailer is to be believed, Guy Ritchie might be one of them. Charlie Hunnam isn’t a compelling choice as the ruler of Camelot, but we’re extremely excited to see Jude Law (at a new career high-point following The Young Pope) camping it up as a villainous sorcerer. ETA May 12

lego_batman14. THE LEGO BATMAN MOVIE

DC have two major live-action blockbusters coming in 2017, but we’re far more hopeful for this LEGO Movie spin-off focused on the Dark Knight, voiced by the wonderful Will Arnett. The voice cast of this madcap animated comedy also includes Ralph Fiennes, Michael Cera, Zach Galifianakis and Billy Dee Williams. ETA February 10

9cb6d092410d7bd4d127936026a4b74e15. THE GREATEST SHOWMAN

Nothing beats a lavish musical! This Christmas release stars Hugh Jackman, the ultimate multi-hyphenate of our times, as circus-founder P.T. Barnum. Also starring are Zac Efron and Michelle Williams. Slightly concerning is Michael Gracey’s total lack of directing experience, but we’ll keep an open mind. ETA December 25

Johnny Depp may have become insufferable, but the Pirates films will always hold a special place in our heart. Geoffrey Rush and Orlando Bloom return for the fifth instalment, hopefully providing a balance to Depp’s horrific overacting, while Javier Bardem looks to be a terrifically pantomimic villain. ETA May 26

coejvggvuaidnsa17. JUSTICE LEAGUE

Zack Snyder’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice was a pretty stupid film, but it wasn’t terrible. Hopefully Snyder’s uniquely operatic aesthetic will be put to good use in DC’s rushed-without-mandate team adventure. Ben Affleck and Gal Gadot have proven themselves a decent Batman and Wonder Woman, but JL will test some of DC’s other heroes for the first time. ETA November 17

kong-skull-island18. KONG: SKULL ISLAND

Every generation of moviegoers has been treated to a Kong blockbuster, and 2016 will deliver the latest rebirth of the ape as he’s first discovered on Skull Island by a 1970s exploration team of Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson, John Goodman and Samuel L Jackson. Should be fun. ETA March 10

140290_tw1_9354-219. COCO

Pixar apply their watertight formula to Mexican mythology, with their latest original production inspired by Dia De Los Muertos. Expect stunning visuals and enough delightful latin bravado to make President Trump wretch. ETA November 22

dark-tower-boys20. THE DARK TOWER

Stuck in development hell for decades, Stephen King’s epic Dark Tower chronicle finally hits the big screen with the tantalising duo of Matthew McConaughey and Idris Elba starring. We’ve never read the books, and honestly don’t know what to expect from Nikolaj Arcel’s film, but we’re getting strong Westworld vibes off Elba’s frontiersman hero. Oh– McConaughey plays a sorcerer. COOL. ETA July 28

bcf1b43d32a4dfbc4343dfb14b905ac2be30f166e5f42accf015312505acb07021. DESPICABLE ME 3

2013’s Despicable Me 2 was something of a disappointment, with overreliance on the minions and a lack of originality. 2015’s Minions spin-off was, surprisingly, a pleasant return to form for Illumination’s billion-dollar franchise. Trey Parker voices the villain, who- as you can see- looks hilarious. ETA June 30

beauty-beast-poster22. BEAUTY & THE BEAST

Bill Condon is a solid choice to direct Disney’s live-action Beast, and the supporting cast includes Ewan McGregor, Ian McKellen, Stanley Tucci and Emma Thompson. However, Emma Watson isn’t a particularly good actress and Josh Gad (who plays LeFou) is perhaps the most irritating man in Hollywood. ETA March 17

Let’s be honest: it’s really, really weird that Tom Cruise is in a Mummy reboot. It’s also pretty exciting. Sofia Boutella and Russell Crowe co-star. This could be a lot of fun. ETA June 9

It’ll be interesting to see how the Fast & Furious franchise lives on without Paul Walker, but the eighth instalment has a number of very positive elements: Charlize Theron and Helen Mirren will join the cast, finally providing some well-rounded female characters in an often-unbearably chauvinistic series. The action will move to New York, and Straight Outta Compton director F. Gary Gray will take over from Furious 7‘s rather unimaginative James Wan. ETA April 14

wonder-woman-gal-gadot-poster25. WONDER WOMAN

Just a few months before she joins the Justice League, Gal Gadot’s Diana Prince will spin-off in the first female solo superhero film of the genre’s modern renaissance (extraordinary, isn’t it?). Gadot proved herself an enigmatic heroine in Dawn of Justice, but this slo-mo-heavy World War 1-set adventure has a lot of reasons to be bad. For director Patty Jenkins, the pressure is on to prove this Woman worthy of her own, very expensive blockbuster. ETA June 2
