Ranking The 8 HARRY POTTER Films

Fantastic Beasts & Where To Find Them is finally released tonight, and so cinema audiences return to J.K. Rowling’s Wizarding World. What better a time, then, to rank the 8 original Harry Potter films from best to worst!

3041_harry_potter_and_the_prisoner_of_azkaban1. …AND THE PRISONER OF AZKABAN

Director Alfonso Cuaron

Scene-Stealer Timothy Spall as Peter Pettigrew

The undisputed Best Piece of Cinema the franchise ever produced, Cuaron’s film is stunningly shot and scored and a generally haunting work. A darker magic, but an immensely powerful one.

Director Mike Newell

Scene-Stealer Brendan Gleeson as Mad-Eye Moody

Best Moment The fourth film has the greatest quantity of magic, and gleefully explores new areas of the Wizarding World. With scene after scene of great character development, this is my personal favourite (but Prisoner is a superior film).

severus-snape-harry-potter-and-the-deathly-hallows3. …AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS – PART 2

Director David Yates

Scene-Stealer Alan Rickman as Severus Snape

Best Moment Yates wraps up the series beautifully, giving Rickman’s Snape a fittingly nuanced backstory and ending, affirming him as the true hero of the series.

thumb-1920-6768964. …AND THE PHILOSOPHER’S STONE

Director Chris Columbus

Scene-Stealer Richard Griffiths as Uncle Vernon

Best Moment Columbus’ films are often derided for their levity, but this is a genuinely delightful family film, establishing the primary cast extremely well.

Director David Yates

Scene-Stealer Toby Jones as Dobby

Best Moment Camping. And more camping. That’s how many remember the penultimate entry, but DH1 is a masterwork of small-scale character moments building to the grand finale of Part 2.

Director David Yates

Scene-Stealer Michael Gambon as Albus Dumbledore

Best Moment Yates’ second effort as director was far more successful than his first, with a series of thrilling set-pieces built around a terrific Harry/Dumbledore relationship and a number of pleasant romantic subplots.

harry-potter-and-the-chamber-of-secrets-hd-wallpaper7. …AND THE CHAMBER OF SECRETS

Director Chris Columbus

Scene-Stealer Robbie Coltrane as Hagrid

Best Moment The second instalment is messy in parts, but presents the Hogwarts campus and its inhabitants in enormous depth. The early flying car sequence remains one of the franchise’s most enjoyable.

325727-fantasy-harry-potter-and-the-order-of-the-phoenix-wallpaper8. …AND THE ORDER OF THE PHOENIX

Director David Yates

Scene-Stealer Imelda Staunton as Dolores Umbridge

Best Moment The franchise gets political– depressingly political- in the fifth entry. A wild diversion from the marvellous fun of Goblet, this is almost unbearably gloomy, but is nonetheless a very powerful component of Harry’s character arc.
