Two of Hollywood’s biggest stars returned to semi-iconic roles this weekend, as Tyler Perry and Tom Cruise vehicles Boo! A Madea Halloween and Jack Reacher: Never Go Back faced off for the top spot.
Despite coming in second in Thursday night preview, Madea gained momentum with $9.4m on Friday and ended the weekend in first place with an estimated $27.6m to Reacher‘s $23m. This is all the more impressive considering Reacher opened in over 1500 more theatres than Perry’s film.
Third place went to Universal horror sequel Ouija: Origin of Evil with $14.1m domestic and $7.9m overseas. The Accountant dropped to fourth place with $14m, down 44% on its opening weekend. It added $5.6m overseas for a worldwide gross of $58.2m (it hasn’t hit the UK and Ireland yet though).
The Girl on the Train and Miss Peregrine earned $7.3m and $6m respectively, while 20th Century Fox comedy Keeping Up With The Joneses had an embarrassing 7th place opening with $5.6m.
Michael Moore in Trumpland grossed $50k from two screens (one in NY and one in LA), while it also received a surprise iTunes release.
