Sony Pictures’ The Magnificent Seven opened in first place this weekend with an estimated $35 million from 3,674 theatres. It earned $2.9 million from domestic IMAX cinemas, and $4.3 million from IMAX locations worldwide. Antoine Fuqua’s western was made for $90 million, and stars Denzel Washington and Chris Pratt.
In second place was another new release: Warner Brothers’ animated comedy Storks, earning $21.8 million from 3,922 theatres. The film opened in 33 international locations, where it grossed $18.3 million, contributing to a global opening of $40.1 million. Andy Samberg, Kelsey Grammar, Ty Burrell and Jennifer Aniston star.
Clint Eastwood’s Sully fell to third place, but added $13.8 million to its domestic total of $92.4 million. Internationally, the Tom Hanks-starring drama grossed $6.5 million for a worldwide total of $126.9 million.
Bridget Jones’s Baby pushed its domestic total to $16.5 million in fourth place, while Oliver Stone’s Snowden rounded out the top five with a $4.1 million second weekend. Snowden has earned $15.1 million to date.
