Box Office: STAR WARS passes $1bn over Christmas weekend

Star Wars: The Force Awakens posted an estimated $286.8 million globally ($153.5 million domestically and $133.3 million overseas) in its second weekend to cross the $1 billion global mark with $1.090 billion in record time on Sunday, Dec. 27, its 12th day in global release. It’s the latest of many industry records set by the film, which has earned an estimated $545 million domestically in 10 days and $546 million internationally in 12 days (excluding China, where the film opens Jan. 9).

Marvel’s DEADPOOL drops a festivee red-band trailer

Based upon Marvel Comics’ most unconventional anti-hero, Deadpool tells the origin story of former Special Forces operative turned mercenary Wade Wilson, who after being subjected to a rogue experiment that leaves him with accelerated healing powers, adopts the alter ego Deadpool. Armed with his new abilities and a dark, twisted sense of humor, Deadpool hunts down the man who nearly destroyed his life.

Dan Brown’s INFERNO debuts first stills

The third film in the franchise that launched with The Da Vinci Code in 2006 and continued with Angels & Demons in 2009, Inferno has Hanks reprising his role as Langdon opposite Oscar nominee Felicity Jones (The Theory of Everything) as Dr. Sienna Brooks, Irrfan Khan (Life of Pi) as Harry Sims (also known as The Provost), Omar Sy (The Intouchables) as Christoph Bruder and Sidse Babett Knudsen (“Borgen”) as Dr. Elizabeth Sinskey, the head of the World Health Organization. Ben Foster (Lone Survivor) is also slated to star as the film’s chief villain.

Box Office: STAR WARS opens with $517m worldwide!

Star Wars: The Force Awakens made its domestic debut with an estimated $238 million, smashing the previous record set by Jurassic World of $208.8 million, which opened in the summer. The film posted the highest Thursday preview gross ever ($57 million), the highest single day and Friday gross ($120.5 million), and it is the first film to surpass $100 million in a single day. It also posted the highest theater average for a wide release with $57,568 and marks the biggest December opening of all time. Star Wars: The Force Awakens received an A CinemaScore from audiences.
