Although it was reported back in April that Mark Rylance was up for the role, TheWrap is now bringing word that The Amazing Spider-Man star Rhys Ifans will play Zanik Hightopp, father to Johnny Depp’s Mad Hatter, in the upcoming sequel to Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland, Through the Looking Glass.
The original film, itself a sequel of sorts to Lewis Carroll’s 19th century texts, “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” and “Through the Looking-Glass,” starred Mia Wasikowska alongside Depp, Anne Hathaway, Helena Bonham Carter, Crispin Glover, Matt Lucas, Alan Rickman, Stephen Fry, Michael Sheen, Timothy Spall, Christopher Lee, Paul Whitehouse and Barbara Windsor and grossed more than a billion dollars at the worldwide box office.
Linda Woolverton, who scripted the Burton film, is again providing the screenplay this time around with Depp, Wasikowska and Carter all set to reprise their roles. Sacha Baron Cohen will play the film’s chief antagonist, Time (which, on beyond the elaborate makeup, might go some way to explaining the fact that Depp is four years Ifans’ senior).
Through the Looking Glass is slated to hit theaters May 27, 2016.
